You don’t need a long road trip to find a little fall. There are still pumpkin-patch outings, garden evenings and quieter outdoor stops to enjoy around the Valley before October ends.
For our first Local Life guide, we’ve picked two farm festivals, a seasonal Phoenix attraction and a relaxed Gilbert alternative. Choose one main outing, leave time for food and keep the official calendar handy before heading out.
1. Schnepf Farms: make a day of the pumpkin patch
Queen Creek · Pumpkin & Chili Party · Through October 31
Schnepf Farms is our pick if you want the bigger farm-festival experience: pumpkins, a corn maze, rides and shows in one outing. The farm’s published weekend hours are Saturday 10 a.m.–10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–9 p.m.
Build your budget around more than entry. The organizer says food, pumpkins and the train ride are separate from general admission; children two and younger enter free. Check the ticket calendar for the current price and available dates.
Where: 24810 S. Rittenhouse Road, Queen Creek. Our planning tip: Choose your must-do activities before arriving so the day doesn’t become a race to fit everything in.

2. Vertuccio Farms: a Mesa fall-festival stop
Mesa · Fall Festival · October 2–31
If Mesa is more convenient, put Vertuccio Farms on your shortlist for a fall-festival outing. Its 2026 festival celebrates the farm’s 28th season with an America’s 250th birthday theme. The published admission is $17 per person, with children two and younger free.
The farm lists Friday and Saturday hours of 9 a.m.–10 p.m. and Sunday hours of noon–7 p.m.; last admission is sold one hour before closing. The final week has exceptions to its usual Monday/Tuesday closure, so check the specific day instead of assuming the standard weekly pattern.
Our planning tip: Compare the total outing cost—including pumpkins and food—with your budget before purchasing. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are a practical choice for a farm visit.

3. Desert Botanical Garden: fall with a desert backdrop
Phoenix · Strange Garden · Seasonal programming through October 31
Want a change from the farm setting? Desert Botanical Garden pairs seasonal displays with its desert landscape. The remaining Strange Garden Family Weekend evening is Saturday, October 24, 6–9 p.m., included with general admission or membership. The organizer lists a pumpkin patch, nature activities and a free pumpkin for children 12 and younger.
For a later outing, the Garden lists Sunset Socials on October 29 from 6–9 p.m. and Howl-Ween on October 31 from 7 a.m.–1 p.m. The dog event is included with general admission or membership; check its pet rules before bringing your pup. Programs have different admission arrangements, so select the actual event you want rather than assuming a standard ticket covers everything.
Where: 1201 N. Galvin Parkway, Phoenix. Our planning tip: Check event hours and special closures separately from the Garden’s general opening hours.

4. Gilbert’s Riparian Preserve: take the quieter route
Gilbert · Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch · An everyday outdoor option
A festival doesn’t have to be the plan. Gilbert’s Riparian Preserve offers seven ponds and more than 4.5 miles of trails across a 110-acre preserve, according to the town’s tourism office. Bring binoculars or a camera and make a short wildlife walk the main event.
This is a nature outing, not a pumpkin patch or a special Halloween event. The town’s rules distinguish general preserve hours from trail and habitat access, which is dawn to dusk. Plan your walk accordingly, stay on designated routes and give wildlife space.
Our planning tip: Pick a short route and let the pace be the point. If you’re interested in the observatory, check its separate schedule and weather-dependent opening rather than counting on it as part of every visit.

Keep the weekend simple
- Want rides and pumpkins? Start with Schnepf Farms.
- Want a Mesa farm outing? Check Vertuccio’s schedule and ticket page.
- Want seasonal activities in a garden? Pick a specific Strange Garden event.
- Want a slower pace? Choose a daylight walk at the Riparian Preserve.
Bring water, sun protection and a layer for later. Before leaving, check the weather, ticket terms, parking instructions and any accessibility needs with the venue. Avoid trying to cross the whole metro for multiple events in one day; a good afternoon close to home can be plenty.
